FIBERSOL®-2 Soluble Dietary Fiber Confirmed as Ultra-low Glycemic Index Ingredient

DECATUR, IL (October 10, 2003) Fibersol®-2, a 90% soluble dietary fiber/digestion resistant maltodextrin marketed and sold by Matsutani America, Inc., has been found to have an ultra-low Glycemic Index (GI). Recent human feeding studies* confirm that Fibersol®-2 has a GI value of less than 5, based on glucose having a value of 100.

Low GI foods are typically foods with GI values of less than 55**. Although the GI of Fibersol®-2 is not necessarily indicative of the GI of a finished food, the presence of Fibersol®-2 can help lower the GI value of the finished food.

Low GI foods frequently are high in dietary fiber and can assist in maintaining healthy blood sugar and serum insulin levels. In addition, low GI foods can help in the management of weight loss, diabetes, and hypoglycemia. Secondary positive impacts on coronary heart disease and other diseases are also characteristic of low GI foods.

"Fibersol®-2 continues to provide both functional benefits for manufacturers and healthy benefits for consumers," comments Bob Heard, president, Matsutani America. "Combining its 90% dietary fiber content and functional benefits of being odorless, tasteless, and stable to virtually all processing conditions, the low GI nature of Fibersol®-2 continues to make it the near-perfect ingredient for low GI and high fiber foods."

Matsutani America, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Matsutani Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. of Hyogo, Japan, is a premier supplier of dietary fiber for the North American food and beverage industries. For more information, visit www.matsutaniamerica.com.
